Greetings! I’m Melyssa and this is my son, Ishuah.
We are an unconventional family of bohemian unschoolers out to prove life doesn’t have to be boring and soul-killing to be successful, and that the parent-child relationship can be cooperative instead of coercive. I’m a firm believer in questioning the status quo. There are so many beautiful ways to have a family, to learn, to grow… One of our favorite questions is “Why Not US?”
As unschoolers, we believe LIVING LIFE is the best way to achieve a well-rounded education. While other kids are learning to regurgitate forgettable information for standardized tests, we’re hanging with entrepreneurs and discussing business building. Our Language class is our blog, where he learns to communicate with grace and truth. Mathematics is approached as a TOOL to help accomplish goals, not as a goal in and of itself. We believe the whole point of learning is to enhance one’s life, not to replace it. We play outside and climb trees and build Minecraft kingdoms…
curiosity is our curriculum.
As a gifted parent of a gifted child, I understand the unique challenges of our unconventional way of seeing the world, chief among which is dealing with friends and family members who do not share our point of view. We are here to be an encouragement to others who are also navigating the waters of living their truth in the face of opposition.
We’ll be sharing things we’ve learned along the way. What has worked for us and what hasn’t…the wisdom of other teachers God has placed in our path…(check out Paula Prober’s excellent blog, “The Rainforest Mind”)…
